The History of the Latvian Language
Latvian is an Eastern Baltic language also known as Lettish. The Baltic languages divided into Eastern and Western branches around 500 CE and Latvian then descended from these starting at around 800 CE.
The first written example of Latvian is a hymn translation from 1530. Early written Latvian was influenced by the German language, due to Baltic Germans with the upper class. In response to this, a standardised Latvian began to form with foreign loanwords undergoing Latvianisation. However, the modern Latvian alphabet did not begin to emerge until 1908.
Latvian is closely related to Lithuanian, another East Baltic language. It is also very similar to Latgalian and Kursenieki which are sometimes considered dialects of Latvian although sometimes given the status of separate languages.
There are three generally recognised dialects of Latvian. These include the Livonian dialect which is largely spoken by those who also speak the Finnic language Livonian, this can also be subdivided into the Vidzeme and Courland varieties. The second dialect is called Middle dialect, which is spoken in the central and the southwestern regions of Latvia. Middle dialect can also be divided into Videzeme, Curonian and Semigallian varieties, which have varying levels of similarities. The third major dialect is Upper Latvian which is primarily spoken in Eastern Latvia. Upper Latvian contains two major varieties: Selonian and Non-Selonian.
