The History of the Wolof Language
The Wolof language is part of the Niger-Congo language family, but unlike other languages in the family, Wolof is not a tonal language. Found primarily in Senegal, Mauritania and the Gambia, Wolof is native to the Wolof people.
Wolof has several dialect which vary according to geography and between variants spoken in rural and urban areas. Dialects of Wolof include mixing Wolof with other locally spoken languages, for example Dakar-Wolof, which mixes Wolof with Arabic and French.
Wolof does not have official language status in any of the countries where it is spoken, however it does have a large number of speakers in several places located near the historic Wolof Empire.Â
In Senegal the official language is French, but Wolof is spoken by about 40 percent of the countryâs population as their mother tongue. As well as an additional 40 percent speak who speak it as a second language. Wolof is spoken as a mother tongue by 25 percent of the population in Gambia, a figure that rises to 75 percent in the capital. Wolof is also spoken by a small number of people in Mauritania.
