The History of the Vietnamese Language
Vietnamese is part of the Vietic branch of the Austroasiatic language family. Vietnamese has the largest number of speakers out of all Austroasiatic languages, yet it has lost many features common to Austroasiatic language. This is due to its location in the Mainland Southeast Asia area, where it evolved similarities with neighbouring languages instead, such as tones as a phonemic feature. As Vietnamese has evolved it has also been influenced by Chinese, Cham, and French.
Historically Vietnamese has been written using Chinese characters and the CháŧŊ NÃīm script which used a variant of Chinese characters with additional Vietnamese invented characters. However, the writing system for the modern Vietnamese alphabet is based on Latin script, using accents to signify tone. There are 1.5 million Vietnamese speakers in the United States of America making it their fifth most spoken language. There are also significant numbers of Vietnamese speakers in Australia where it is the seventh most spoken language. Most Vietnamese speakers in Europe live in France where Vietnamese is an officially recognised minority language and the most spoken Asian language.
