The History of the Setswana Language
Setswana is also known as Tswana and is part of the Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo language family. Similar to other Bantu languages Setswana is a two-tone language with three click consonants. Setswana is spoken natively by the Batswana people and was primarily a spoken language until recent centuries. Â
Setswana is recognised as an official language in Zimbabwe where it is one of 16 official languages. It is also an official language in South Africa and Botswana, it both countries it is used as a bridge language used to communicate between speakers of different native languages. Subsequently 77% of the population in Botswana speak Setswana, making it the most widely spoken language in the country. This is not reflected in the written language as English is used for most official written communication across the country.
Whereas in South Africa only 8.9% of the population speak Setswana, with most of these speakers living in the North West region. However, Setswana is still the fifth most spoken language in South Africa, with over 4 million speakers in a country with no majority language. Setswana is not widely spoken outside of the African continent, but here at Translate UK we are well prepared to handle any Setswana language needs.
