The History of the Kurdish Language
Kurdish is composed of three dialects, Kurmanji (Northern Kurdish) Sorani (Central Kurdish) and Pahlewani (Southern Kurdish). Laki is considered by some to be a fourth dialect of Kurdish, while others classify it as a sub-dialect of Southern Kurdish.
Kurdish is spoken predominantly in Kurdistan, a historic and geo-cultural region that spans across parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Kurmanji has between 15 and 20 million speakers across Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran, making it the most widely spoken dialect of Kurdish. Sorani has between 6 and 7 million speakers predominantly in Iraq and Iran where Pehlewani also has around 3 million speakers. Both Kurmanji and Sorani are considered standard written forms of Kurdish.
While Kurdish is primarily spoken in Kurdistan, the language is also spoken by small communities of Kurds elsewhere in the world, including Armenia, Georgia, Russia, and Lebanon. Kurdish immigration rose in the seventies creating communities of Kurdish speakers across North America, Australia, and Europe. Â In the United Kingdom, current estimates of Kurdish speakers in the country are as high as 250,000. This has made Kurdish an increasingly common minority language across the country, and it is now one of our most popular language requests. Here at Translate UK we are well equipped to handle any Kurdish translation or interpreting needs.
