The History of the Punjabi Language
Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken in the Punjab region, located in Eastern Pakistan and Northwest India.
Punjabi has its origins in the Prakrit languages which were spoken across India from around the third century BCE to the eighth century CE. These varied across regional divides, with Paishachi Prakrit being spoken in North and North-western India. Punjabi evolved from this Prakrit language around the seventh century.
Today it is the eleventh most spoken language in India and the most widely spoken language in Pakistan.
While most of the Punjabi languageâs 113 million native speakers are in the Indian subcontinent there are also large numbers of speakers across the world. In the United States of America Punjabi is the twenty-sixth most spoken language, it is also the tenth most spoken language in Australia and the fifth most-spoken language in Canada.
In the United Kingdom Punjabi speakers are only outnumbered by the native British languages (English and Welsh) and Polish. With 0.5% of population in England and Wales being native Punjabi speakers, understanding the language is vital for communications within the country.
