The History of the Albanian Language
Albanian is an Indo-European language primarily spoken by Albanians in the Balkans. First documented in the 5th century, Albanian is an independent branch of the Indo-European language family and not closely connected to any other. Albanianâs origins are highly disputed with much unknown, though it is likely a descended of a Paleo-Balkan language. The language contains two main dialects, Gheg and Tosk. These dialects are spoken to the north and south of the Shkumbin river respectively. Standard Albanian is based on the Tosk dialect.
Albanian is the official language of both Albania and Kosovo. In North Macedonia Albanian is a co-official language alongside Macedonian. Albanian is also a recognised minority language in Italy, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia. In addition to these recognised speakers, communities of Albanian speakers can be found elsewhere including Croatia, Turkey, and the Ukraine.
Albanian speakers are also located in Greece where they speak the Arvanitika variant of the Tosk dialect and in Italy where they speak the ArbÃŦresh variant of Tosk.
In the United Kingdom the Albanian speaking population is incredibly small, however this is one of our most requested languages. Because of this we have many linguists skilled in all dialects of Albanian and are well placed to meet all Albanian language needs.
