The History of the French Language
French is an Indo-European language and part of the Romance subgroup that descended from the Vulgar Latin spoken during the Roman Empire. Originally the result of Latin and Gaulish languages coexisting in close proximity, it was later influenced by the Celtic and Frankish languages.
Though it was once limited to France and southern Belgium, overseas expansion led to French becoming one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Today, Paris has the largest number of French speakers (12.2 million) but it is closely followed my many countries across the world, including: Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (9.0 million), Abidjan in the Ivory Coast (7.1 million), Montreal in Canada (3.8 million) and Port-au-Prince in Haiti (2.5 million).
In 2015 Europe contained 40% of all French speakers, with 35% living sub-Saharan Africa, 15% in North Africa and the Middle East, 8% in the Americas and 1% in Asia and Oceania. The widespread nature of French has resulted in many regional dialects as well as French-based creole languages. We understand the importance of using linguists who are familiar with the local varieties, in order to ensure an accurate translation.
French is widely used as a lingua franca to bridge language gaps and is often learnt as a second or third language. It is used frequently in international diplomacy and trade and is one of three working languages of the European Union. This makes it an ideal language to use for marketing materials and technical or medical instructions as it can be widely understood beyond its many native speakers.
