The History of the Hungarian Language
Hungarian is a Uralic language spoken primarily in Hungary. It is also spoken by Hungarian communities in the surrounding countries including Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and the Ukraine. Hungarian has the largest number of speakers out of all the Uralic languages. However, it is geographically isolated from other Uralic languages which are predominantly in Northern Europe and North Asia. Hungarian has developed while surrounded by Indo-European languages. While Hungarian is closely related to Finnish and Estonian, it has been influenced by the Slavic, Turkic and German languages that surround it.
Hungarian is considered one of the hardest languages to learn. The language has 44 letters in the alphabet and 14 vowels, the pronunciations of which can change the meaning of a word entirely. The order of words in a sentence is flexible and the order will change the emphasis conveyed. Since its early development Hungarian has changed very little and still contains 68% of its original words. For comparison English only retained 4% of its original words.
In the United Kingdom there are an estimated 95,000 Hungarian speakers, a figure that has been growing steadily over the last two decades. This has made Hungarian an increasingly common minority language across the country, and it is now one of our most popular language requests. Here at Translate UK we are well equipped to handle any Hungarian translation or interpreting needs.
