The History of the Portuguese Language
Portuguese is an Indo-European language and part of the Romance subgroup that descended from the Vulgar Latin spoken during the Roman Empire. The Romans settled near Celtic civilisations that spoke Hispano-Celtic languages, which influenced the languages development. Following the Moorish invasion, Arabic became the administrative language in the region and heavily influenced the local languages.
Portuguese evolved out of Medieval Galician in the Kingdom of Galicia in North Portugal. This Proto-Portuguese was first recorded in the nineth century and evolved through Old Portuguese into modern Portuguese beginning in the sixteenth century. During this time, it was used as a lingua franca in Asia and Africa, in addition to being spread to the Americas.
Only 5% of Portuguese speakers live in Portugal, with larger numbers living in Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique. Portuguese is the most widely spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere, spoken across South America, Latin America, and Africa. In Latin America it is the second most spoken language, with Spanish being the most common. While in Africa, Portuguese is one of the ten most spoken languages and an official language in six countries. Worldwide, Portuguese is the sixth most common first language and the third most common European first language.
Portuguese is used frequently in business, trade, and international diplomacy. As Portuguese is understood by large numbers worldwide, it is an ideal language for reaching new audiences and for any material that needs to be understood by large numbers of people. Portuguese is an ideal language for website translation, marketing materials, technical instructions, medical instructions, and pharmaceutical translations.
