The History of the Slovenian Language
Slovenian – also called Slovene – is a Slavic language, primarily spoken in Slovenia. Slovene first appeared as a distinct Slavic dialect in the tenth century and developed into a language of its own as it separated from the other Slavic languages. During the Middle Ages, German was spoken by most of the nobility in the region, but Slovene was widely spoken amongst the common people. Because most of the nobility wrote in German, Slovene was not widely used in written works. Consequently, it was not until 1515 in Vienna, that the first Slovene words were printed.
Following World War II Slovene was used as one of the official languages of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and widely used in the territory of Slovenia. Throughout the twentieth century Slovene has been used in the region for education and administration.
Finally, in 1991 Slovenia gained independence and Slovene, now called Slovenian became the official language of the country. Currently Slovenian is the native language of 88% of the country’s population and it is recognised as one of the 24 working languages of the European Union.
While most Slovene speakers live in Slovenia, sizable communities also exist in the surrounding countries. Slovene speakers can be found in Serbia, Hungary, and Croatia, as well as 25,000 Slovenia speakers in Austria and 90,000 in Italy. There are also an estimated 300,000 Slovenian speakers across the rest of the world including Canada, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, and the United States, which has the largest population of Slovenian speakers outside Europe.
